Positive Data Presented at Society of Interventional Radiology Annual Meeting 2008

Biocompatibles International plc (LSE:BII) is pleased to announce that further positive data has been presented by prominent physicians at the Annual Meeting of the Society of Interventional Radiology, taking place from 15–20 March, 2008 in Washington DC.  Altogether, ten abstracts of pre-clinical and clinical research into Biocompatibles’ products were accepted for oral or poster presentation.

Dr Robert Martin, Associate Professor of Surgery, University of Louisville, Kentucky
presented data from a single-arm, multi-centre study of 30 patients with unresectable metastatic colorectal cancer, who had failed at least one line of therapy. Objective response was 75% at three months and 66% at six months. The treatment was considered to be "safe and effective....as demonstrated by a minimal complication rate, acceptable tumour response and sustained reduction of CEA levels".

Dr. Abbas Chamsuddin, Associate Professor and Chief of Interventional Radiology, Emory University Hospital, presented data from a trial of 29 patients treated with chemoembolisation with LC Bead™ and 11 patients treated with conventional chemoembolisation (Conventional TACE). Complete Response was 76 % and 27 % respectively and Objective Response was 86 % and 45% respectively (p= 0.002).

Dr Alex Laurent of Hôpital Universitaire Lariboisière, Paris, presented the results of a series of pre-clinical experiments which demonstrated how doxorubicin is distributed into liver tissue when released from Drug-Eluting Beads. The investigators observed “high tissular concentrations of drug at a long distance from the bead over several months.” This supports the argument that doxorubicin delivered by the Drug-Eluting Beads delivers better clinical results as a result of its controlled delivery.

Crispin Simon, Chief Executive of Biocompatibles commented, “Our strategy is to establish Drug-Eluting Bead therapy as a standard of care - with the science to support it. The HCC presentations by Dr. Chamsuddin and Dr. Laurent help us to set the scene for the presentation of the PRECISION V data in September.”

¹CEA - Carcinoembryonic Antigen. CEA is used as a tumor marker, especially for cancers of the gastrointestinal tract.

²Objective response is complete response and partial response; and excludes stable disease and tumour progression.
